** ALL MEMBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME TO ATTEND THESE WORK- SHOPS AND MEETINGS!
In trying to grow our Local Union, the Committee Members, Shop Steward's and members come together quarterly to share ideas and educate. In doing so, we are hopeful to build a stronger relationship and support system to better represent our members. Everyone is welcome, please join us! Let's plant the seeds, nurture and help grow the Local Union
Our Shop Stewards play one of the most important roles of the Union. Shop Stewards act as the Organizer, Communicator, Leader and Problem Solver for our workers. The following is some useful information to help our Shop Stewards fulfill their roles.
Stewards will be called upon to file grievances. A good practice is to exercise responsibility and good judgement when investigating grievances:
1. Consider whether there is a just cause for the grievance:
Did the employer give notice?
Did the employer investigate before disciplining employee?
Was the employer fair and practice equal treatment?
Was the discipline given by the employer reasonable?
a. Grievances need to be completed in a timely manner and within the labor agreement.
b. Be as detailed as possible and get first hand information from all parties involved. The more accurate the information, the smoother the grievance process.
c. Never refuse to file a grievance. Not all grievance matters are contract violations. Listen more than talk and repeat back to the witness and grievant what you understand them saying.
d. Our stewards and grievants are encouraged to have a preliminary discussion with management to determine if a violation has occurred. If this is unsuccessful, a formal step should follow. Contact a business agent.
